BODIE McGAUGHEY NAMED 2023 RECIPIENT
OF MARK WORKMAN SCHOLARSHIP
VEGAS (April 6, 2023) – The Vegas Junior Golden Knights announced today, April 6, that Bodie McGaughey has been named the recipient of the 2023 Mark Workman Scholarship.
Created in memory of the late Vegas Golden Knights amateur scout, the Mark Workman Scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete 14 years old or older in the Vegas Junior Golden Knights program who best exemplifies passion, sportsmanship, team play, work ethic, discipline, volunteerism and academic merit.
McGaughey is a Las Vegas resident who played for the 18U AAA Vegas Jr. Golden Knights this season and is a senior at West Career and Technical Academy. Introduced to the sport during the NHL Golden Knights’ inaugural season, McGaughey learned to play in eighth grade and made a travel team for the following year. He credits hockey for motivating him academically so his parents would allow him to play, and for instilling confidence and determination that have helped him beyond the rink.
“Bodie is a shining example of the qualities we know hockey can help instill in our kids,” said Darren Eliot, Vegas Golden Knights Senior Vice President of Hockey Programming and Facility Operations. “His work ethic has helped make him a leader among his peers, and his love for the game was clear in his application essay. It is an honor to recognize him as this year’s Mark Workman Scholarship recipient.”
Away from the rink, McGaughey is an honor roll student who has been recognized at West Tech for overall outstanding citizenship and as the student of the month. He volunteers with the Central Church food drive and youth group and has helped coach in the Lifeguard Arena Lil’ Knights program and house league. He plans to attend Colorado State University and study zoology.
McGaughey and his family will be in attendance at the Vegas Golden Knights game Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings at T-Mobile Arena. He will be a guest on the FOX Sports Las Vegas pregame show and will be featured during AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain’s television broadcast.
“Winning this scholarship means the world to me, and I’m proud to be a part of something that carries on Mr. Workman’s legacy,” said McGaughey. “I care about this sport more than anything and have spent the last four years doing everything I can to succeed; this is proof that hard work pays off. Hockey changed the direction of my life, and I pray that it will always be part of my life.”
Mark Workman passed away February 14, 2018, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. He was a passionate hockey man who dedicated his life to the game. In addition to his involvement at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels, he gave much of his time to youth hockey and to the growth and development of the game. He was proud to represent USA Hockey through his volunteer work at their spring and summer development camps. He loved working with young hockey players, and he cared deeply about their growth and personal development on and off the ice.
