This past weekend nine young athletes attended the Try Goalie For Free event held at City National Arena.  Participants joined the on-ice event as members of the current Lil Knights, 8U House, 10U house, and 12U House Leagues.

The concept for this event was to provide athletes an opportunity to put the goalie pads on and receive some introductory goalie coaching as led by Teddy Stanowski, Andrew Stewart, Zach Wickson, and Jesse Granger.   The event was coordinated with Kara Santoro in partnership with USA Hockey.

Upon arrival participants were greeted by volunteer coaches, and were escorted to their locker room where goalie equipment was displayed for them to grab a set of gear that was to their liking.  Participants received a free hockey jersey and information about next steps in becoming a goalie.

On the ice, the kids worked within an ADM (Adult Development Model) style of lesson plan where they worked on skills such as diving saves, stick saves, butterfly and even an occasional “superman” dive onto their stomachs.  Music was playing over the arena’s speakers and an atmosphere of having fun was the only thing the coaches wanted to emphasize in the day’s agenda.
